Postmaster Team update

Posted by Annalivia Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Most of the US Postmaster team just got laid off, including Christine. I am still employed, but of the non-programmers, I'm all that's left in the US. *

This is a devastating blow. If people reading this have job leads for any of my folks...ex-folks...please drop me a line, or post in the comments and I'll pass it on.

Jobs needed: Sysadmin, spam fighting/abuse, postmaster-y stuff, deliverability, programming, mail gateways/MTA, and of course management. We lost a lot of people outside the immediate Postmaster team also: anti-spam programming, mail/MTA, database, etc.

These people are the best of the best...
...and I am going to miss them more than I can even begin to express. Eight years is a long time.

*yes, Madkins is safe.

  8. Anna,

I am really sorry to hear about the lay-offs. I remember my days in the Hotmail Postmaster group very fondly, we were a tight knit group. I am sure your team has the same types of feelings. Anyway, we have an opening right now for an Email Delivery Specialist bu I think we are looking for someone local. I will email you the posting.

    Thanks,
    Travis Wetherbee

  10. Hey Anna,

As said on here, glad you're ok but my heart goes out to the folks let go. Lay offs, as sound as they may be for business, never seem to have the same affect on the peoples' lives it touches.

If anything looks appealing here, pls let me know and I'll push through to the right folks.

    Thanks,

Very sorry to hear about the lay-offs. Please let them know that Cvent is actively looking for talented tech folks. We are located close by in Tyson’s Corner and have former AOL people already on our team.

  19. Corporate memories seem pretty short :(

AOL was one of the first ISPs to discover that the cost of not having on-the-ball spam-fighting postmasters was significantly higher than them.

I really hope this doesn't mean a return to the bad old pre-1999 days when AOL was one of the dirtiest spam sources on the Internet - and I hope that the postmaster team all find alternate jobs quickly. Any employer with sense should be headhunting already...

  20. That's terrible. We're definitely interested in expanding our anti-spam development and operations staff.

Anyone from the team looking for work in the field should e-mail me: williamsjj at digitar dot com

They can learn more about us here: digitar.com

  26. As someone old enough to remember a time before spam and the September that never ended, I did the unthinkable when I accepted a job at AOL (in Internet Access, which went away some time ago) largely based on the incredibly significant work you AOL mail folks had done.

Be proud of what you achieved always and don't let the demise of a company which lost its way detract from this.

Hiring folks, get these people while you can - not just the ex employees but the ones still there. AOL doesn't deserve them any more.

  27. Ricky Says:
  28. I know of a company hiring for an email forensics and deliver-ability investigator. Some anti-spam work but mostly trouble shooting for educational networks. If you are interested or anyone you know is a certified specialist with email contact me at ufophotos@gmail.com
They have a few positions that would be right up some of your smarter friends alleys.

  34. I'm so sorry to hear this, Annalivia. :( You guys did a rather excellent job of keep spam and abuse from AOL down in the noise over the past several years. This is not good news for the Internet either.

  40. I'm sorry to hear about the layoffs at AOL, but we do have an opening at Yahoo! Groups that might be interesting to someone. We're looking for a senior programmer to lead our anti-spam efforts on Groups. It will require high level data mining skills (experience with Hadoop, for example, would be particularly useful).

If you know of anyone who might be a good fit, please have them send a resume my way, and I will get it the right folks here. Thanks!

About Me

I'm Annalivia Ford, long time anti-spam expert. I've been in the profession of blocking the bad guys and helping to translate ISP requirements into language that senders can understand for nearly a decade now, though I got into fighting spam as an amateur 13 years ago.

I do not in any way intend to speak for my employer. The content of this blog will be either opinions that are strictly mine, general observations, or information that is already in the public domain.

Have a question? Would you like to give me a job? Or a million dollars to give to Barry? Do you want a cat? You have to want a cat! Email me!

ID YOU FIND A TYPO?? PLEASE TELL ME! I'm serious.

...or something like that, anyway. Actually, she just thinks SPAM is tasty.
